Design of an Integrated Speed Tracking and Toll Management System for Express Highways

This paper is about the more sensitive and innovative way of maintaining the traffic speed standards along with impartial toll distribution for every citizen passes through the highway giving prior importance to the human safety, security and egalitarianism. It’s a novel replacement for the dull conventional traffic system. In this, the time of passing of a vehicle is recorded at every instant where the scanners are placed to deduce the fair toll amount from their account and to record their speed. Even if, we prefer to use Radio-frequency identification tags on every vehicle that passes the toll gate, on the worst side, the Optical Character Recognition technology is used and applied over the high contrast images being captured by the cameras. The time-and-speed thresholds between the checkpoints are then calculated and have been set up accordingly. The vehicles exceeding the thresholds are noted and are charged with appropriate penalty. This results in an impartial and symmetric way of tracking speed resulting on an effect over the fear-factor of drivers on taking up speed. This work aims to provide the real-time speed monitoring system and fair toll distribution system thus ensuring more reliability and quality to the Indian traffic system.

The combination of the RFID and OCR technology encompasses a cost-effective design strategy that makes the proposed system unique and efficient for Express Highways in Indian Roads. The basic idea of our proposed system is to develop an efficient speed control mechanism for vehicles in Highways thereby giving concession for Tolls to drivers who follow driving guidelines.

The flow of our system begins from the RFID Scanner where the scanners emit continuous signals so that the tag will be read as soon as the vehicle entering the check point. The returning signal from the tag is checked whether it is valid or not. When the signal is invalid, then the camera is activated and the images are captured. This captured image is filtered and characters are extracted for this we apply Optical Character Recognition technology. After extracting the details of the vehicle, it is stored in a temporary storage for calculating the speed of the vehicle and appropriate fine or penalty is applied. On the other side, if the vehicle details are extracted by reading the tag, time of passing of vehicle is noted and the same vehicle tag id is entered the second time when it reaches the next checkpoint. The time of entering of vehicle at each check point is used to calculate the speed of the vehicle and if the vehicle speed exceeds the threshold speed the details is stored for penalty

Raspberry Pi, Arduino Uno, Ultrasonic sensor, Camera and Web Server. The RFID Scanner scans the tag and time will be recorded temporarily. At the same time, the Ultrasonic sensors detect the presence of vehicle. If the tag signal and ultrasonic sensor returns a valid value, then the camera module remains deactivated, where as the vehicle is detected and the tag is invalidated, then the camera module is triggered and high contrast image is captured. Here the Arduino Uno is used to initiate RFID Modules and Ultrasonic Sensors and to make communication with the Raspberry Pi Board.

Speed control is a fundamental priority and the cornerstone of road safety. Since number of accidents on highways increases day by day so is the necessity to check speed to provide a safe journey. Our project aims to control the speed parameter of vehicles in the highway. Here we use a hardware module which has a US sensor, RFID module and a Raspberry Pi module attached to the checkpoints at Highways. These checkpoints are placed at regular intervals and the speed of each passing vehicle is calculated. RFID stickers placed in vehicles will be used to gain information of the vehicle and the over speeded vehicles will be summoned. A camera module with an OCR technology is attached to the hardware module which captures the images of number plates in vehicles at instances where RFID fails to identify the vehicle. This makes Marvel Highway a highly fault tolerant system. Our future work focuses on integrating this with the Google Maps which helps to give detailed idea of traffic in Highways as well. Code Shoppy
